In Tennessee–if not in every state in the Union–you are required to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. That means stop when someone starts to cross. If the crosswalk is not at an intersection (as is the case in the town where I work), people can enter the crosswalk at any time. So pay attention.
You should especially be careful about stopping when the crosswalk leads to the courthouse. If you run over an attorney or an attorney’s secretary, kiss your money goodbye. I’m just saying….
