Why We Dream

Work, Ultra Design Inc

I think dreaming is the brain's version of hard drive defragmentation. The brain pulls out random bits and pieces of information and sorts it–and you see this in action in the form of a dream.

If I'm not mistaken, dreaming is linked to memory-retention skills; people who do not get adequate amounts of REM sleep have poor memory skills–both short and long term.

Even though dreaming is the brain organizing its memory library, I do think that dreams can be helpful in pointing to underlying hopes and worries; the more time you spend thinking about something, the more likely it will show up in a dream.
