While looking through pictures today for a possible book cover, I found the exact picture of Marie—even better than the actress I had pegged for her. I thought it might be amusing to even claim that Marie was the model for this picture—back in 1895—but I can’t seem to find any biographical information on the artist, Harold H. Piffard, to know where he was and what he was doing. Marie was living in the U.S. at the time, but that doesn’t mean that she didn’t travel. Still, I’d like to have some general idea about the circumstances surrounding the painter before I make a claim that she was the model. At any rate, this is very much how I picture Marie. Ironic that it’s meant to be a picture of Jeanne d’ Arc.
